OUR STORY
Kibera Pride Initiative (KPI) was founded in 2012 by Irene Kasandi, a social worker and welfare specialist who grew up in the heart of Kibera, one of Africa’s largest informal settlements. Irene’s childhood was marked by the challenges of poverty—limited access to education, basic needs, and opportunities. Yet, with the support of the Missionaries of Charity, the AVSI Foundation, and a close friend, she pursued her education and transformed her life. Inspired by her journey from hardship to hope, Irene established KPI to break the cycle of poverty for vulnerable children and families in Kibera and beyond.
What began as a small effort in Olympic Estate, Kibera, has grown into a beacon of hope. On October 6, 2012, KPI was conceived, and by February 26, 2014, it was officially registered as a national NGO. The Kibera Pride Children’s Home opened its doors on August 11, 2013, providing a safe, nurturing environment for orphans, vulnerable children, and survivors of neglect and gender-based violence. From an initial outreach of 7 children, our home-based care program now supports 150 children, while our Children’s Home has served 420 children, currently housing 58, aged 1 to 22.
In September 2024, our Children’s Home faced devastating arson attacks, destroying our premises and belongings. Despite this setback, our commitment to protecting and empowering children remains unshaken. Today, KPI is a community-driven organization dedicated to holistic care, education, and empowerment, transforming lives one child at a time.
