Save Kibera Pride : Renovation & Donation Appeal

Dear Friends,

In the past few weeks, Kibera Pride Children’s Home has faced unimaginable tragedy. A series of three devastating fires have left the home of 56 orphaned and vulnerable children in ruins. These incidents have destroyed their living spaces, essential supplies, and personal belongings, forcing the children to relocate and leaving them in urgent need of support.

The Fires: What Happened?

The first fire struck on the evening of September 16th, destroying the girls’ sleeping room where 22 girls, aged 5-17, once slept. Neighbors rushed to help, but most of the girls’ belongings were consumed by the flames. A second fire broke out in the storeroom just a day later, wiping out six months’ worth of food supplies, school materials, and other essential items.

As the home was still reeling from these tragedies, a third fire erupted on September 20th, this time targeting the boys’ sleeping room. Witnesses saw a man fleeing the scene after deliberately pouring petrol through the window and setting the room ablaze. A 13-year-old girl in the room at the time, feeding a baby, narrowly escaped with petrol splashed on her pullover. She raised the alarm just moments before the fire engulfed the room, saving lives but leaving the home further devastated.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have launched an investigation into the fires, now confirmed to be acts of arson. Meanwhile, the children have been relocated to a temporary house within Olympic Estate, generously funded by well-wishers. Initially, they were sheltered at CFK for three days following the first two fires and later spent eight days at Karama Academy after the third fire.

What Was Destroyed?

The fires have left the home in urgent need of rebuilding and restocking essential supplies, including:

  • Sleeping rooms for both boys and girls
  • Food supplies like rice, beans, maize flour, cooking oil, milk, and sugar
  • Toiletries such as diapers, sanitary towels, soap, and tissue paper
  • Household items including mattresses, blankets, beds, kitchenware
  • School supplies like uniforms, shoes, textbooks, and stationery
  • Security measures like a perimeter wall, CCTV cameras, and security lights
